Almost three years after the release of the tenth version of the program, Ableton has presented a major update to Ableton Live 11. The developers have added new features and devices to the program, as well as refined existing functions. According to the creators, the update focuses on providing new opportunities for “recording, performing and experimenting.”
The first notable innovation is the updated Comping function for audio merging. The DAW now organizes multiple replays of audio files and MIDI regions into separate takes, and users can mix different parts of different takes together to get the “perfect” part. In addition to this, Ableton Live has learned to link two or more tracks together for simultaneous processing.
Ableton Live 11 has full support for the MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) standard. The program has a new work area Expression View, which allows you to work with different envelopes to achieve the desired level of expression. The built-in sampler, arpeggiator and wavetable editor also receive full MPE support.
As for new devices, the program has been replenished with ten new devices. The Hybrid Reverb lets you create algorithmic and convulsive spatial effects. Spectral Resonator will split the audio into several parts to change them further in time based on the sound frequency. In turn, Spectral Time is able to work with broken parts and create interesting delay effects on their basis.
For fans of creative and experimental processing, the creators of the update have added a collection of tools and effects Inspired By Nature. The collection devices are inspired by various natural and physical sound phenomena. In addition to this, the program received a PitchLoop89 instrument that combines glitch, delay and vibrato.
For stage and concert needs, Ableton Live 11 received the Live Tempo Following feature. According to the developers’ description, the program learned to “listen” to incoming audio from other performers and instruments on stage and automatically adjust the tempo based on the received signal. In case someone starts to play faster or slower, Ableton will adjust the tempo on its own so that the parties sound harmoniously.
The new Macro Snapshots feature allows you to save copies of macros for later use. A rack can store up to 16 macros, while their launch and operation can be completely randomized.
The developers have expanded the automation system by implementing the Follow Actions tool. With its help, users can set exactly what actions will be taken after a certain event.
Another innovation is the Note Chance function, aimed at humanizing performance. The function sets the likelihood of triggering and sounding any sound within a project or part, so that Ableton Live generates numerous variations of the same pattern. Moreover, Note Chance can be configured to change the pattern over time.
Along with Note Chance, the program has a Velocity Chance function, which changes the speed of sound extraction in MIDI regions based on the specified settings. The simultaneous operation of Note Chance and Velocity Chance will allow you to create unique and non-repetitive patterns, and also make MIDI parts easier to come to life.
Other updates to Ableton Live 11 include Voice Box tools for creating instruments and racks based on vocals, Mood Reel and Drone Lab for generating textures. The program will also include the Upright Piano, as well as the Brass Quartet and String Quartet string and wind quartets. The last three instruments were created in collaboration with Spitfire Audio.
The developers note that the new version will bring improved tools and devices from previous versions, as well as an updated and expanded content library. A number of improvements also affected the editing of clips and the system for metering the load on the computer’s processor. Hints with scales, frets and scales have appeared in the MIDI editor, informing which notes “fit” the current key of the project.

Spectral Resonator
Breaks the spectrum of an incoming audio signal into partials, then stretches, shifts and blurs the result by a frequency or a note in subtle or radical ways. The MIDI sidechain input also allows musicians to process material in key and even play the device as if it were a polyphonic instrument.
Spectral Time
Transforms sound into partials and feeds them into a frequency-based delay, resulting in metallic echoes, frequency-shifted and reverb-like effects. The Freeze function captures and holds a slice of audio – either free-running or in time with the beat – for stuttered, glitched and washed-out effects.

Create jittery glitch effects, delayed digital shimmers and outlandish vibrato with this Max for Live pitch shifting device created in collaboration with Robert Henke and inspired by the Publison DHM 89 – an early digital effects processor.
